My overall area of research interest is media rhetoric, particularly in serial killer cases. This is going to be the focus of my dissertation. How the media contributes to the silencing around violence against women through the use of victim blaming, passive phrasing, and simply not reporting at all. The phrase “violence against women” itself is passive, and its use often neglects to include men’s roles in inflicting that violence. So, I plan to concentrate on the victims, rather than the killers. My concern is that I too might contribute to this ongoing dismissive narrative.
I also have an interest in feminist and queer rhetoric and narratives in popular culture as well as racist/sexist rhetoric in the law.
